Connecting an informational guide to a useful next step

Connect an informational guide to one specific next step that helps the reader act on what they learned.

The next action should follow the guide's logic. If an article helps readers compare options, an offer to review their requirements may be useful. A generic “book a demo” button can be premature when the reader has not established which option fits.

Finish the answer first

Check whether the page gives the reader the framework, examples and limits promised by its heading. A practical check is whether a visitor can use the page to make progress towards their goal.

A form is not a substitute for the missing answer. Put the next step after the point where an individual circumstance begins to matter.

Describe what the reader will receive: a scoped reply, a checklist reviewed with an adviser or a short conversation about their constraints. Explain who will respond and what details are needed. If the next step is self-service, such as comparing specifications, offer that instead of requiring contact.

For a hypothetical guide on selecting warehouse shelving, a sensible progression is to help the reader calculate space and load requirements, then offer a review of those figures. Asking for a phone number before providing the calculation changes the promise of the page.

Check whether it is used well

Measure click and completed enquiry events if the analytics setup supports them, but look at relevance too. Did the request include enough context for a useful response? Did the sales team answer the question the page raised?

GA4 can report configured key events, yet an event count alone says little about lead quality.

If a guide attracts readers but few suitable enquiries, test whether the answer, audience or next step is misaligned. Do not add more prominent forms until you understand which part of the journey is failing.

Effective vs. Ineffective Next Steps in Informational Guides

  • Effective ApproachAfter guiding readers through assessing their warehouse space and load needs, offer a review of those figures by an adviser.
  • Ineffective ApproachImmediately prompting for a phone number without first providing tools to calculate requirements.

Key Metrics to Evaluate Next Step Effectiveness

Click-through rate on next step
Measure engagement with the call-to-action.
Completed enquiry rate
Track how many form submissions result in actionable leads.
Lead relevance score
Assess whether responses address the original question raised by the guide.
